Evidence of eutrophication in Arctic lakes

چکیده

Lakes and ponds are dominant components of Arctic landscapes provide food water for northern communities. In the Greiner Lake watershed, in Cambridge Bay (Nunavut, Canada), bodies small (84% <5 ha) shallow (99% <4 m deep). Such characteristics make them vulnerable to eutrophication as temperatures rise nutrient concentrations from greening landscape increase. Here, we investigated compared 35 lakes watershed August 2018 2019 determine their current trophic states based on chemical composition phytoplankton The had higher status than lakes, but overall, most sites were oligotrophic. ERA5, located upstream any direct human influence was classified eutrophic due high total phosphorus (32.3 ?g·L ?1 ) a proportion Cyanobacteria (42.9% biovolume). Satellite imagery suggests lake may have been last 30 years. We hypothesize that coupled effects catchment elevated local snow accumulation patterns promote leaching rates soils. recommend further analysis monitoring could become more widespread with ongoing climate change associated increases temperature, precipitation, catchment–lake coupling.

Disappearing Arctic lakes.

Historical archived satellite images were compared with contemporary satellite data to track ongoing changes in more than 10,000 large lakes in rapidly warming Siberia. A widespread decline in lake abundance and area has occurred since 1973, despite slight precipitation increases to the region. The spatial pattern of lake disappearance suggests (i) that thaw and "breaching" of permafrost is dri...

Modelling of the eutrophication process in lakes and reservoirs

A closed, energy-driven, matter-flow loop of nitrogen—phosphorus cycles has been proposed as a fundamental structure for understanding and controlling the eutrophication process in aquatic environments. It consists of 11 storage variables of nitrogen and phosphorus, and 14 transformations which represent observable biochemical reactions and ecological interaction. The mathematical model has bee...

Eutrophication Thresholds -- Assessment, Mitigation and Resilience in Landscapes and Lakes

7. Project Summary: Eutrophication, a persistent environmental problem characterized by turbid water, toxic algae, fish kills, waterborne disease, and loss of aquatic ecosystem services, may be related to important thresholds in the phosphorus (P) cycle. We will address two main questions: (1) What thresholds in the transport and recycling of P in linked terrestrial-aquatic ecosystems cause lak...

Eutrophication and recovery in experimental lakes: implications for lake management.

Combinations of phosphorus, nitrogen, and carbon were added to several small lakes in northwestern Ontario, Canada, at rates similar to those in many culturally eutrophied lakes. Phosphate and nitrate caused rapid eutrophication. A similar result was obtained with phosphate, ammonia, and sucrose, but recovery was almost immediate when phosphate additions only were discontinued. When two basins ...
